It’s fast approaching that time of year when secondary school, college and university exams are upon us.
As parents, we want to support our children but know that it isn’t always easy. Anxiety, Stress or Tension in our children can sometimes go unnoticed by us because we didn’t recognise the signs or our child has hidden it well.
Some of the signs to look out for include: Headaches, Tiredness, Irritability or even Loss of Appetite. Your child may portray some kind of change in their behaviour that seems out of character or simply have that look of defeat about them – indicating they have already given up due to the pressures.
Supporting our children in a variety of ways will help. Communicate with them, let them know you are there for them in a non-judgemental way (their health and mental health is far more important than the final result of the exam), encourage them to talk about how they are feeling, their concerns, fears and any issues they are worried about. Encourage them to talk to teachers or specialist support staff at school, college or University.
Their anxiety may be forming due to an imagined peer pressure, concern over letting parents down, feeling that they must get a certain mark or level or simply that they haven’t mapped out where they go after their exams (College, university, work).
Help is available from many different sources including Counsellors, Coaches and Therapists. 1 to 1 intervention or Therapy can often be just what is needed to remedy the situation and help the student back on track and maintain focus to get through the situation successfully.
We wish all students about to start their exams the very best and remember “Your best is all you can give” and that is enough.
